Christmas Parade!

Nana invited us to the Brandon Christmas parade that goes right by her house, so we bundled up and got ready. It was at night which was really exciting, especially when all the police motorcycles came roaring down the road with their lights flashing.

My lap was a perfect spot to store candy...perfect for me to eat it from as well.

Here's my Momma and Daddy....awww, aren't they cute?

And here's Nana and Pop-pop. My Nana got married this summer to a wonderful man named Kerry. His wife went to be with Jesus just like my Grandpa Dennis went to be with Jesus, and now God brought them to each other. God is a good God.

Simplifying life - freezer cooking....with kids

Momma here. After reading stay-at-home Moms who blog about the wonders of freezer cooking (basically making a bunch of one thing at one time and freezing it in meal-size portions) I decided to give it a go. I have almost entirely given up casseroles (this alone has simplified my cooking world and kitchen mess immensely). But this freezer cooking thing, I'm a believer! I did a freezer cooking afternoon in December that looked like this. It took me 2 1/2 hours and I made:

3 meals of Southwest Chicken Soup

4 meals of Marinated Chicken Tacos

3 meals of Honey Mustard Grilled Chicken

3 meals of Herbed Chicken

3 meals of Popcorn Chicken (our version of chick-fil-a chicken nuggets)

PLUS, in that same timeframe I chopped up enough ham for a month's worth of breakfasts for Thomas (i make him 3 omellettes at a time and he re-heats them each morning) plus bagged the rest of the ham into several-day portions for sandwiches and such. That's 16 main courses (all i have to do is bake them or put them on the George Foreman grill) and the ham in 2 1/2 hours. I did it again in January, no pictures that time, and made over 30 meals of 10 different recipes (chicken and beef that time) in 2 afternoons (i make 3 meals of each recipe usually). I kid you not, this is so easy. All I used was a bowl for each marinade, a whisk to mix it up, 2 plates for working on the chicken, a knife, and a cutting board. I cleaned up in literally 5 minutes and had all that to show for it!!!!! I do it now with waffles, muffins, oatmeal, fruit, pancakes, cookies, turkey (cook the turkey, debone it, bag it up in meal-size portions), all kinds of things. It really has made dinners so much easier. In January I left some of the chicken unmarinated, but I did prep it into cubed chicken, some tenders, and some breasts to use for the recipes that can't be prepped ahead of time. Even this saves so much stress in my late afternoons.

What do my children do while I'm doing this? I do most of it while they're napping, but when they wake up it might have looked like this IF Thomas had been home:

But since he wasn't (notice that beautiful turkey stock jarred up on the counter behind Tyson), it looked a little more like this:

and this:

But it was worth it! My deep freeze is stocked with a wide variety of chicken and beef from pre-seasoned and shaped hamburgers to Sweet & Sour Chicken to Southwest Rubbed Chicken. It took some work up front to sort out my recipes and get a stack of freezer-friendly ones with a variety of flavors that we like, but it's AWESOME!

Whhhhheeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! Cole's first zipline experience

One of the sweet "cherry on top" features of our house is a zipline that our neighbors built across the back of 3 of our yards. They even have a child's harness for kids like me. I finally got up the nerve and one day I just HAMMERED Momma to let me ride that thing. So when Daddy came home from work they hooked it up, hooked me into the harness, and then I chickened out.

Tyson's no chicken, though. He would've gone in a heartbeat if they would've let him.

So Mommy rode with me :). It was fun, but I only needed to do it once.

I was much more interested in pulling it back up the hill than riding on it again, but I conquered my fear! I rode it once :)

My First Trick-or-Treating experience - Rowr!

I'm not into dressing up in costumes, so Mommy decided the closest she was gonna get was to put me in my tiger pajamas for Halloween. We went to the Fall Festival at church where I got my face painted like a tiger, ate a hot dog (have I mentioned I could eat 3 in one sitting?), and played games for candy. I had a ball.

But that wasn't all! When we got home (Tyson still needs to get to bed on time, even on Halloween), Daddy took me out Trick-or-Treating in our neighborhood for a few minutes, and I hauled off all kinds of loot.

Happy 3rd Birthday, Cole!!

Mommy decided that since she's not gifted in party planning and has a tough time doing it, she would instead focus on making us a cool cake on our birthdays and let that be the main event. I really love trains, so she found a video for an easy (yes, this really is easy, she says) train cake on YouTube.

TaDa! Will I like it? Yes, I do. If she's not careful with me, the drool will get on the cake. I did have a party too, complete with 2 cousins and 2 other friends and pizza....oh, how I love pizza...

I got some fun presents for my birthday. The pistol is from when Mommy was a little girl (she had 3 brothers, you know), and the holster was a consignment sale find for $1 - but when you're only 3, you don't care where it came from or how much it cost. Bad camera angle on my face, you say? No, that's the face I use when I'm being disagreeable. I didn't want my picture taken so I gave the "stink-eye" accompanied with a low growl. They're working on me, but I'm pretty set on it.

And my favorite gifts, a baseball glove (thrift store for 50c), baseball (you don't want to know where it came from), and baseball tee ($5.00 consignment sale)! Mommy says you should really know where this stuff comes from so that: A. you won't think I'm spoiled, and B. you won't think you have to spend $100 to make a 3-year-old happy. Look at that smile!

Tyson, which way did the ball go?

Chuck E. Cheese - special birthday outing with Daddy

Daddy started taking me to Chuck E. Cheese on my birthday when I turned 2. Here we are heading out for our father/son outing on my 3rd birthday. I have a cool dad.

Interesting note, the game below was my favorite on my 2nd birthday. And guess which one was my favorite on my 3rd birthday....same one.

This year I was big enough to climb in everything.

In an effort to keep the birthday spending in check we didn't eat at Chuck E. Cheese, but Daddy did take me out to Sweet Tree to get some frozen yogurt afterwards. It's his favorite place so I tihnk he may have had ulterior motives....

But I'm cool with that. Look at the portion I got. Momma would never have allowed that madness.

Pumpkin Carving/Coloring with Daddy

Daddy and Cole went to get pumpkins - a big one for Daddy to carve, and a little one for Cole to color. Thomas had more fun with this project than he's had in a long time.

Note to self for next year - marker comes right off of pumpkins, right onto clothes.

But it was worth it. Thomas used cookie cutters to shape the cutouts.

Cole Says Take 2: 25 Reasons to smile and Thank God!

I ran out of time last night, here's the bulk of the funny-cute-memorable things that come out of this little guy:

1. When I put Cole to bed I ask, "Can I have a kiss?" His response for weeks was, "I'm gonna give you "NOTS uh tissus" (lots of kisses)." And he would give me kisses on my hair, my cheeks, my ears, my fingers, my nose, my eyes, and he always asked if he could kiss my feet...yuck. We're not parent-child mouth kissers around here but he usually asks to kiss me on the mouth. "No, silly, you can kiss on the mouth when you get married like Mommy and Daddy are married." For awhile this would bring on tears but now he asks just to be funny.

2. After goodnight kisses and praying together, he always asks me to "Sing a song with my fingers." One time when I was singing to him I tapped out the beat of the song on his fingers as I sang. Since then, every time I put him to bed he wants me to do that. If I don't find his hand when I start singing I'll feel his little hand searching for mine as he whispers, "With my fingers."

3. Cole hated baths for the first 2 years of his life, and really hasn't enjoyed them until the last 9 months or so. He doesn't like being naked and hates water in his eyes and being cold. When he gets out of the tub I towel him off and then he wraps his towel around himself and says, "Hold me like a baby" in a very forlorn voice like he's going to collapse if I don't. He wants me to pick him up in a cradle hold and carry him to get clothes on. It's so funny to hear that little voice wimpering, "Like a baby! Like a baby!"

4. What child doesn't like making tents? Whenever Cole is near as I make our bed, he jumps up on it and says, "Make a tent with the white blanket! Let's make a tent!" I usually oblige and we get on the bed and I trap air in a bubble under the blanket with us and hold the edges down. But it's hard to get my 5'10" frame completely under the blanket so I usually would just put my upper body in it with him. Not good enough. If my feet weren't in it too he would say, "With your feet! Put your feet in!" So now he asks for that from the get-go and says, "Let's make a tent with the white blanket and your feet!" He checks too, every time, to make sure my feet are in the bubble with us.

5. Going back to goodnight kisses, Cole loves my earrings. They always each get a goodnight kiss from him and usually he says, "I like these earrings." I wear earrings every day but one day I had happened to take them off before his bedtime. He put his hands on my ears where he usually likes to touch my earrings before he gives them a kiss and was surpised to find them bare. "Mommy? Do you have any earrings on today?" Me: "No, not today, I took them off already." He looks at each ear and then moves on. But every time I do have them on I hear, "Mommy, I like your earrings."

6. Perhaps it's the earring compliments where I always respond with "Thank you," I'm not sure, but recently Cole has started to understand how compliments work and for several days would ask me, "Mommy, do you like my shirt?" Me: "Yes, I do." Cole:"Thank you," very matter-of-factly. A few minutes later: "Mommy, do you like my socks?" Me: "Yes, I do, they're very nice." Cole "Thank you." So cute :)

7. We always pray before we eat, and Cole is adamant about this. He rarely forgets, and he knows he's supposed to wait until we pray before he eats, which he usually remembers to do. One day we had friends over and in the mayhem of talking with my friend and getting food on the table for all the kids, we forgot to pray. While the kids were eating in the dining room, my friend and I were talking in the kitchen. After about 5 minutes I hear Cole call, "Mommy, you forgot to pray!" I went in and there he was, watching everyone else eat, hadn't touched his. :)

8. When Tyson goes to bed we always say, "Alright, say goodnight to Ty-Ty!" And everyone waves to him as we carry him to bed. Cole often comes running behind and says, "Wait! I want to give him a kiss and a big hug!" which he does with great care :)

9. Children's memories are amazing. One day we went to the Children's Museum and saw 3 deer on the side of the road (we live next to the Natchez Trace). For weeks after that, every time we passed that spot I would hear from the back of the car, "No deers today."

10. When I talk on the phone, Cole is waiting to pounce as soon as I hang up EVERY TIME with: "Mommy, what was that?" He means 'who' but I haven't been able to convince him of that. I'll tell him who it was and it's immediately followed with, "And what she say?" He wants a run-down of the conversation every time :).

11. Thomas and Cole were working in the garage one day while Tyson and I were inside, and Thomas blew the leaves and grass out of the garage to clean it up. After he's done Cole says, "Thank you for being a big helper Daddy."

12. Althought not particularly independent by nature, he's definitely hit the stage of wanting to do things by himself if he can. As with a number of phrases he says often, he's one word off and he always says, "I want to do it in myself!"

13. He loves to open Tyson's door when Tyson wakes up from his nap and gets very offended if I do it without him. Several times I apparently opened it before he could get there, so then he started telling me, "Mommy, get behind me" as we were both headed for the door. He was like a little shepherd and I was his flock. He made sure I was NOT trying to get past him before he would open the door :).

14. A number of months ago we started teaching Cole the child's prayer of "God is great, God is good, let us thank him for our food." Apparently our teaching tactics were out of wack because for weeks he was stuck with something like this: "God is good...God is good......Let us thank him for our food. Amen." Thomas would try to correct him mid-prayer to help get him on track but it didn't help so finally we went back to saying the whole prayer through ourselves several times instead of trying to teach it to him in parts like we had the first time. After a day and a half he could do it perfectly. It's interesting how minds and memorizing works, we had tried for WEEKS to teach it to him in parts only to have all the pieces mixed up every time. So I'll remember, the way it sounds when his little voice says it is, "Dod is date, Dod is dood, yet us sank him sor our sood." The F and G sounds are still tough ones.

15. One of the cutest things he's started doing that makes me so happy when I hear, is when he pretends. He likes to play with my belts or a tape measure or anything long that he can find, and usually he plays that he's taking doggies for a walk. Sometimes they're snakes, though. One afternoon I was sitting outside watching them play and he brought a stick over. Very quietly he says earnestly, "Mommy, it's a snake. You can pet him, he's real sweet." Apparently that's what I tell him about dogs that he's mortally afraid of, "You can pet him, he's real sweet," because he tacks that on every time when he brings me a new item that's some kind of animal that he wants me to pet. "He's wuh seet" is what it sounds like."

16. I don't generally get up early enough to shower before the boys get up (when Tyson's up at 6:00 it's hard to beat him). So I'm usually putting on makeup with Tyson playing by my feet and Cole sometimes sitting on the counter playing "cutting my fingernails" on himself with a tweezer. One day he dropped my eye-liner off the counter and Tyson got it. He had previously asked me what it was called and I told him, and the moment Tyson touches it he yells, "Tyson! Don't touch that EYE WIPER!"

17. I was going to take the boys for a walk one morning and already had Tyson in the stroller when I ran back inside to get something off the counter. I could hear them in the garage right next to where I was so I knew they were fine. A moment later I turn around and there's Tyson, in the stroller, right next to me in the kitchen. Cole has pushed him inside the house. "Cole, what are you doing?" I ask since Cole knows that outside things don't come inside. Very seriously he says, "He wanted his momma."

18. Thomas got a big pumpkin and a little pumpkin for him to carve and Cole to color respectively. I came out to see how the project was going after awhile and said, "Cole, that looks great!" He responds with, "It looks great because I did a great job." There you have it :)

19. Cole is still obsessed with the zoo and for several weeks would ask several times a day if we could go. "Are we going to the zoo today?" I would hear over and over. Finally he came up to me one day whining and whining that he wanted to do something fun. I told him I was working in the kitchen and he needed to go find something fun to do on his own until I finished and to stop the whining. He comes back in a pleading voice with, "I want to go to the zoo, that will make me better."

20. Cole's not a picky eater, and he loves to eat, usually clearin his plate. He always asks what's all on his plate when I set it in front of him, and one night I told him, "It's chicken and applesaue and pizza." "Chicken and applesauce and pizza?!?!??! YIPPEE! That's just what I need!" he shouts.

21. When he's preoccupied he sometimes calls me "Daddy" or Thomas "Momma." One day he was playing with Thomas in his room and said, "Hey Daddy?" Thomas says, "I'm not Momma, I'm Daddy, the WRESTLER!" (They love to wrestle together) Cole says, "You're the wrestler, and Momma's the cleaner. She does the dishes." Hmmm...

22. Tyson threw up a couple times the week of Thanksgiving, and one of those times was unfortunately on a chair that took awhile to clean up. Cole, never having thrown up in his memory, is fascinated by it. He walks up close and says, "Mommy, what IS that?" I've already told him but he wants to hear it again. "Tyson doesn't feel good and he threw up," I tell him as I continue to try to clean it up. "Can I touch it?" Cole asks nonchalantly.

23. Today at lunch I had just given them both a bath after letting them play in the mud and dirt outside. Tyson was tired and hungry so I whisked him quickly to his high chair without brushing down his hair. He consequently had a peak of hair on his head that made a small triangle/cone shape. Cole kept looking at him during lunch and then he said, "Mommy, Tyson has silly hair." Me: "Yeah, he does. I didn't have time to make it nice." Cole, giggling: "He looks like a silly birthday man." A pretty far stretch for a small peak of hair to remind me of a birthday hat, but to him it was apparently the perfect correlation.

24. Cole has finally clicked into the realm of learning his colors. I was beginning to think he was legitimately color-blind because of his amazing ability to recall so many other things, and his inability to name ANY color consistently. But one day, out of the blue, it clicked. "Mommy that's a black car. And that's a white one," he said at a stop light. I nearly fell out of my seat! I began asking him other colors and he knew red, green, and blue. It had been filing away in his brain somewhere and when it clicked it seemed to all click at once. So never fear, those of you moms who are worrying that your child is behind. This joyful little 3-year-old sat up, crawled, walked, talked, knew his colors, and is still being potty trained after almost all the other boys his age at church did each of those things, and he's just as smart as a whip. He did it all in his own time. It's been such a good lesson for me in just enjoying what MY BOY is doing, not in worrying about what everyone else's boys are doing. God made them the way they are, and him just like he is, and I love this little guy to PIECES!

25. For this next one you'll need to bear in mind Cole's obsession with the zoo and exotic animals, many of which he knows the names. Thomas and Cole were riding in the car together on their way home and Thomas was teasing him about whose house they were going to. "It's my house," he would say. "No, it's MY house!" Cole would reply. So Thomas said, "It's not your house, I pay the bills. Do you pay any bills?" Cole replies matter-of-factly, "Yes." Thomas: "Which bills do you pay?" Cole: "Hornbills."

What a wonderful time of life!

Cole Says:

More Funny-Cute-Memorable Originals:

1. Cole still loves to read, but the way he reads sometimes can drive me a little batty. He requires something to be "read" on every page including pages without words or pictures, like the very first and last ones of every book. He also gives me 1/16 of a second to begin reading once a page is turned, and if I'm 1/24 of a second late, he says in a robotic voice, "READ IT." So starting a book often sounds like this:

Cole: "READ IT"
Me: "Harry the Dirty Dog"
Cole: "READ IT"
Me: "Green page"
Cole: "READ IT"
Me: "White page"
Cole: "READ IT"
Me: "Illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham". If there happens to only be copyright info on the page, he's happy for me to read him "Copyright 1956." He doesn't care what it is, he just wants me to read SOMETHING ON EVERY PAGE.

After all that, we can actually begin reading the story...I'm worn out.

2. On the same note of reading, Cole often pulls the next book from the top of the stack he's piled for us and says with excitement, "Hey! We like this book!" Always makes me smile.

3. We read a book called "Lentil" by Robert McCloskey about a boy who plays a harmonica. Cole was enamored by the idea of a harmonica and one day while I was putting on makeup he saw my shiny silver eye shadow case that's long and thin. He put it in his mouth and blew a few times and said incredulously, "Hey! It's not working!"

4. He has a Winnie the Pooh look-and-find book where you have to find objects hidden in the picture. One of the items in the picture is a trampoline. I asked him to find it which he did and then he said, "Hey, we saw one of those on Silly Videos (America's Funniest Videos). They fall off and hurt their "yeg" (leg)." I'm glad he knows what trampolines are good for...injuries :)

5. He's very interested currently in the background objects in pictures. If the main picture is a barnyard, he finds the tiny 18-wheeler on the highway in the background and that's what is most interesting to him. While looking through a book of family pictures I hear, "Hey! There's a heron!" I, not being able to recall any pictures of herons in my whole life history, go to see what he has found. Sure enough, there is a small heron on the corner of a postcard on one of the pages. He loves the small things that aren't the main part of the picture.

Tyson - my pumpkin - "uh-oh, Momma, Dadda, and Night-night"

Tyson took his first steps!! For awhile we've suspected that Tyson is quite capable of walking, he just has no interest in it. Yesterday he was excited to see Thomas and while I was taking his jacket off he started walking towards him with me holding him. As I took the jacket off I just moved away and there he went - 4 steps to Thomas! The little stinker...holding out on us :)

Tyson can say "Uh-oh", "Momma", "Dadda", and "Night-Night" and knows what they mean. I would say that "Uh-oh" was really his first word that he knowingly used. He understands simple things like "Sit down", "give me a big hug", and "put it in here", but he acts oblivious to my admonishments over playing with the Playstation (he knows how to turn it on and eject the disc from it - it's like magic to him), pulling on cords under the computer table, playing in the kitchen trash, ripping books, and the list goes on. BUT, he continues to be a fun, bright, jolly little boy most of the time. His favorite activites are pulling all the magnets off the fridge, unloading the pantry, pulling the grill off the bottom of the refrigerator to my daily consternation, messing with the blinds (also to my daily consternation), playing on any bed other than his own, wrestling anyone who lays on the floor, and playing outside. Some of those things I'm not sure how much he actually enjoys doing them, but it's like he can't rest until there are no magents on the fridge and the grill is waiting to lame someone on the kitchen floor. He's much more adventurous than Cole was at this age and loves to get dirty. He loves baths and laughs with glee when Cole squirts him in the face with water. Cole has never laughed when water was in his face once in his life. Tyson thinks it's hilarious. Tyson loves baths so much that you have to sit right there while the tub fills up because as soon as he hears the water he comes flying in there and can heave himself over the edge to get in the water.

Above is how he plays "peek-a-boo". I love to see his little hands smashed on his face, sometimes covering his eyes and sometimes missing them. He still eats a lot, will eat almost anything, and eats really fast. I'm usually just sitting down to my meal and he's almost done with his. He goes to bed at 7 with no fussing and likes to have a burp cloth to hold and chew on. He stuffs (yes, stuff is the right word) it in his mouth as he puts himself to sleep so every morning you come get him and he first hands you (he likes to empty his crib before he gets out) a soaking wet burp cloth with a toothy grin. He gets up anywhere between 6 and 7:15 in the morning and still takes 2 naps a day, usually at 9:15ish and 1:30ish, sleeping for about 3 hours total. He goes to sleep without a fuss for naps as well as bedtime and often reaches for his bed when he knows it's time to go to sleep. He'll let you rock him (Cole did not like rocking) but after a minute or two he wants to either play or get in bed. He hates going to the nursery at church and they often have to page me to come get him because he's beside himself, but he loves to play at Mimi's house!

I am so so blessed to have this little jewel for my son. He is less cautious than Cole but has the same sweet personality and jolly disposition. He and Cole love to play together - they wrestle a lot and I often hear lots of laughing and then crying and have to regularly remind Cole that when Tyson cries that means GET OFF HIM.

"Tyson, where's your tongue?" He sat on Cole's trike yesterday for about 30 minutes and watched us play and pulled leaves off the bush in the front yard. Cole is very caring towards Tyson. He always likes to hand him all his toys when we get in the car since Tyson has usually thrown them out of reach during the last ride. If Tyson cries Cole often says over and over, "It's ok, Ty-Ty, It's ok. It's ok, buddy, it's ok." They do have their share of strife over "sharing", and Tyson can be just as ugly as Cole in swatting at Cole when he's frustrated or mad, but generally they love each other and Cole is very protective of Tyson. If Tyson is in another room I often say, "Cole, can you check on Tyson and tell me what he's doing?" And Cole will run in there and report back. Although sometimes I hear, "He's playing with the thing that comes out of the other thing." Then I know I better check on him. But usually I hear, "He's tayin' (playing) on my bed" or "He's yookin' at books" or "He's gettin' the diapers out of the trash can" - better go check again. This method also works in the car when Tyson is being quiet. He's still rear-facing so I can't see him. "Cole, what's Tyson doing?" {pause}. Cole: "He's just yookin'" meaning he's just looking out the window. Or, "He's seepin' (sleeping)". Cole often takes it upon himself to save Tyson from his own misbehavior and I know I need to intervene when I hear, "Tyson! Tyson, we don't tay (play) dat!" I come running and Cole explains, "Tyson was gettin' the tash (trash) so I took it away from him," or, "Tyson was touchin' dis so I took it sum (from) him." No matter that the item in question is equally dangerous for both parties. Cole takes his role as big brother very seriously and loves Tyson dearly.
